top autumn hair care tips

Your hair needs a little more tender loving care in the cooler months. Dry scalp, dullness and frizz are common concerns we come across as we transition from Summer to Autumn. Stay ahead of the curve with our expert tips to help prep your tresses for the new season.

How do you get healthy and shiny hair back after spending long days in the sun, salt water and chlorinated water during summer. Is a hair-cut or trim the best solution?

Having a hair-cut is a fantastic way to get rid of some of those dry crunchy ends, but it’s not going to give back an all over shine.

The first and most important step to restoring health and shine to hair following a carefree summer it to properly remove the salt and chlorine followed by replenishing the hair with hydration and nutrients.

We recommend removing that salt and chlorine out properly with Aveda’s Suncare Shampoo, the only one that actually removes both salt and chlorine from the hair while replenishing with Tamanu and Coconut oils along with green tea and vitamin E. There are just so many options to replace moisture and revitalise the hair with protein in Aveda!

What are the best in-salon and at home hair treatments post summer?

What products do you recommend?

Post summer, a Shine Treatment in salon is the way to go! Containing jojoba oil, it’s a beautiful glossy treatment helping to close down the cuticles and replenish the hair. This treatment also allows us to add a little tone in there for anyone who’s hair tends to go brassy though the summer giving your colour some life again.

For home, I would highly recommend using a treatment once a week. The Damage Remedy Restructuring Intensive Masque as well as the Be Curly Detangling Masque are two beautiful options. Currently in salon, we have an amazing Damage Remedy Kit that gift a full size Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair with the Damage Remedy Shampoo and Conditioner. This kit provides a holistic treatment for the hair by gently washing away pollutants while strengthening the hair to protect against future damage.

When it comes to hair colour and getting a new look for Autumn, what do you suggest?

What are the hair trends for the new season?

As Autumn brings in warmer fuller tones in the world around us, so too can we give this richness to our hair.

Warmth does not just mean orange, it can mean so many different colours, deep browns, golden blonde and strawberry highlights. This can be achieved with something as subtle as a new toner or adding in a second or third colour to your highlights. I invite you to explore warmer tones intentionally this autumn.

The cooler temperatures brings about everyday hair care challenges. How do you fight frizz and prevent cold weather hair damage?

In cooler temperatures our hair is generally exposed to more artificial heat. From the heating we use in our homes and work places, and in using our blow-dryers more. This makes it important to use a heat protector like, Aveda Heat Relief & Thermal Conditioning Mist.

My recommendation for fighting frizz in the cooler months is the Aveda Smooth Infusion nourishing Styling Creme or for curly hair our Be Curly Shampoo and Conditioner to define curls, fight frizz and boost shine.

How important is good nutrition for healthy hair in the colder months?

Good nutrition for healthy hair is vital all year round. Iron rich meals are great for boosting hair health. If you’re not getting enough iron into your diet, your hair could be calling out for help. Here are some simple super food inspiration that are both delicious and packed with nutrients to fuel the body whilst also providing beauty benefits.

Super Green Smoothie Bowl

Collard Green Veggie Wrap

Tumeric Quinoa Veg Stir Fry

The cooler months are a fantastic time to nourish the hair as we are less exposed to the sun, salt and chlorine meaning there’s naturally less being stripped from the hair. If we build the hair up in this time it is going to be stronger healthier and more resilient for the next coming summer, prevention is always better than damage control.
